FIDE has checked readiness of Khanty-Mansiysk to host the Olympiad 2020
Within the 95-year history of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) such an honour was awarded only to three cities – Moscow, Thessaloniki and Buenos Aires.
The delegation of the International Chess Federation headed by Director of FIDE Representative Office in Russia, FIDE President’s Advisor Berik Balgabaev, arrived in the capital of Ugra in order to discuss preparation and organization of the Olympiad, evaluate the work already performed and “synchronize watches”.
The issues of universal sports complex construction, preparation of transport infrastructure as well as accommodation and food for participants, officials and guests of the Olympiad 2020 were discussed during the meeting chaired by Deputy Governor of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District – Ugra Yuri Yuzhakov.
Commenting on the status of sports complex construction, Director General of Ugra Development Fund Roman Genkel noted that at present time the preparation of the construction site is at the final stage: old engineering communications have been dismantled, garbage has been removed and the technological driveways of construction machines have been completed.
At the beginning of June, a summary of the state expertise of the project documentation will be received, after that the works on the installation of the pile field will begin on the site: 1286 piles will be driven into the foundation of the future building. It is planned that the sports complex will be built by June 2020.
The total area of the Olympiad venue will add up to more than 13 thousand square meters. Simultaneous visitor capacity of the sports complex is 242 people per hour. Facilities for mini-football, basketball, volleyball, handball, tennis, badminton, artistic gymnastics and sports acrobatics will also be built there. Sports grounds with mobile stands will be placed in a one-storied hangar-shaped building. Administration and amenity facilities, technical facilities for athletes and coaches, a medical unit, doping control, a cafeteria, facilities for media, press conferences and commentators will be located in a four-storied building.
District capital will host more than 3,000 participants, officials and guests. The main task is to make the stay of such number of people as comfortable as possible.
Participants will be accommodated in the hotels of the city – 702 double and 1230 single rooms as well as in the campus and in two houses under construction on the streets of Karl Marks and Obyezdnaya.
As Sergey Artamonov, Director of District Department of Physical Culture and Sports, emphasised, Khanty-Mansiysk prepares for the Olympiad 2020 on a scheduled basis, organizational, technical and other issues are being resolved according to schedule.
Following the results of the meeting FIDE President’s Advisor Berik Balgabaev expressed confidence that Ugra will demonstrate high level of preparation and hosting of international tournaments once again.
“FIDE has been actively cooperating with Ugra since 2005. All events were held here at the highest organizational level. I am sure that there will be no problems this time,” Berik Balgabaev said, “some issues have already been resolved; some of them will be resolved. FIDE noted with great satisfaction that the organisers had already fulfilled all their financial obligations to the International Chess Federation both in organising the World Cup 2019 and the World Chess Olympiad 2020. I am convinced that all other issues that have been voiced today will be resolved appropriately. We have no doubt about that.”
«The Chess Olympiad 2010 in Khanty-Mansiysk was a kind of a breakthrough,” Berik Balgabaev added, “because video streaming of the tournament was used for the first time, and it has become a mandatory standard for everyone now»
“The Chess Olympiad 2010 in Khanty-Mansiysk was a kind of a breakthrough,” Berik Balgabaev added, “because video streaming of the tournament was used for the first time, and it has become a mandatory standard for everyone now.”
“In addition to online broadcasting of the games themselves there will also be video broadcasting with expert comments, analysis of the moves and options at the Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk. 660 games are planned to be held at the same time — it adds up to 1320 chess players. We will try to pay attention to as many players and games as possible,” President of Ugra Chess Federation, Deputy of the Duma of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District – Ugra Vasily Filipenko said.
“Everyone realizes what a high responsibility it is,” Vasily Filipenko added, “Khanty-Mansiysk set a certain standard for the most important chess competitions. It is necessary not only to live up to this standard, but also to raise the bar. The organization of such large-scale events as the World Cup and the World Chess Olympiad is teamwork. It would be difficult to imagine hosting high-level world tournaments without extensive support of the Government of Ugra and personally Natalia Komarova, the head of the region.”
