“Chess fever” in Ugra
Sergey Artamonov, Director of the Department of Physical Culture and Sports of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District – Ugra, told about this during the meeting with journalists at the Regional Information Centre “Ugra”.
According to his words, preparation of the infrastructure for placement of the Olympiad facilities is being carried out as scheduled. For instance, construction of the building (the venue of the upcoming international tournament) will be completed in early 2020.
However, as the head of the Department emphasized, these facilities are being constructed not only for the Olympiad, but first of all for the residents of the region to meet their needs for social, cultural and leisure services.
It is worth to remind that the agreement concerning organization of the World Chess Olympiad 2020 in Khanty-Mansiysk was signed by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the Ugra Chess Federation on February 7, 2017
According to the FIDE requirements competitions of such a level should be held at a tournament hall with the area of at least 10 thousand square meters, excluding additional facilities such as recreation and congress and exhibitions venues.
“We understand that it will be quite difficult to host 3,500 people, but we are preparing, everything is going according to plan, there will be places to stay to hold the international event,” – Sergey Artamonov said.
More accurate figures are as follows: about 2,000 players and team captains, over 500 attendants, about 200 delegates of the FIDE Congress, over 200 match referees and 100 media representatives.
«Chess is our sport, and all Russian people know that people of Ugra play chess since school»
“In the short term we are planning to launch a countdown to the start of the World Chess Olympiad 2020, so that every citizen of Ugra and Russia would know about the upcoming international event, look forward to it and understand that not Khanty-Mansiysk or Ugra, but the entire country has been entrusted with this right to host the international tournament.” Chess is our sport, and all Russian people know that people of Ugra play chess since school, which is unusual for many people. I can even say that according to the estimates of the Ministry of Sport of the Russia, we have a real “chess fever” in Ugra: everybody plays chess – both adults and children” – Mr Artamonov concluded.
Another milestone preceding the Olympiad will be the Chess World Cup that will be held in Khanty-Mansiysk from September 9 to October 4, 2019. The tournament will gather 128 strongest players from over 50 countries.
The President of the Ugra Chess Federation Vasily Filipenko emphasized “Nowadays the Autonomous District is among the leading regions in terms of the number of children involved in chess: the intellectual game has been included in the school curriculum for several years. The Olympiad is a top-priority project for regional government and Chess Federation and the region itself, not only from the perspective of sport, but this kind of events helps to bring up a healthy rising generation.”
